A suddenly swollen face can make any pet parent do a double take. One minute, your cat or dog looks perfectly normal; the next, your precious pet’s furry face appears to have a very lopsided set of cheeks.

The cause could be something as simple as an insect sting, but facial swelling can also signal an abscess, dental problem, infection, or allergic reaction.

At Bayside Animal Hospital in Granite Bay, our caring team can help determine what lies beneath the swelling and what your pet needs to feel comfortable again.

Could It Be an Abscess?

An abscess is a pocket of infection that can develop beneath the skin or around a tooth. In cats, bite wounds are a common cause of abscesses, particularly in outdoor cats or those that may encounter other animals. Dental infections can also cause cat facial swelling.

In dogs, a tooth-root abscess can cause noticeable swelling beneath the eye or along the face. Other clues may include bad breath, difficulty chewing, reluctance to have the face touched, or pawing at the mouth.

So if your pet suddenly develops cat facial swelling or a dog swollen face, don’t assume it’s simply an insect bite.

Could Allergies Be the Culprit?

Allergic reactions can also cause sudden swelling around the face or muzzle. An insect sting, medication, food, or another allergen may trigger a reaction.

Even mild swelling still deserves a call to your veterinarian, but facial swelling accompanied by difficulty breathing, collapse, vomiting, diarrhea, or widespread hives can indicate a severe allergic reaction and requires immediate veterinary attention.

What Else Can Cause Facial Swelling?
