Capillaria In Cats

Understanding, identifying, and treating Capillaria and other urinary problems in cats is extremely important for your felineโ€™s overall health and well-being. And while Capillaria infections are more common in canines, they can still affect our cat friends, and when they do, they typically take up residence in the bladder.

In this blog, our team at Bayside Animal Hospital takes a closer look at Capillaria (aka bladder worms) so you can spot the warning signs and seek help when your cat needs it.

Understanding Capillaria in Cats

Capillaria are infectious parasites, specifically known as bladder worms, that can infect a cat's bladder and, occasionally, other parts of the urinary tract and the kidneys. Bladder worms can lead to various health issues such as inflammation and (in extreme cases) a urinary blockage if not promptly treated.

Symptoms of Capillaria in Cats

Cats infected with Capillaria often exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Frequent urination
  • Straining to urinate
  • Blood in the urine
  • Discomfort or pain while urinating
  • Frequently licking the genital area
  • Accidents outside the litter box

Causes of Capillaria in Cats

Animals such as foxes, raccoons, and coyotes that are infected with bladder worms can excrete the eggs in their urine, leaving cats vulnerable to contracting Capillaria by way of:

  • Ingesting contaminated water or food
  • Exposure to environments contaminated with the eggs of the parasite
  • Ingestion of intermediate hosts such as earthworms which carry the larvae of the parasite

Diagnosing and Treating Capillaria in Cats

Because urinary problems are not uncommon for cats, an accurate diagnosis is needed so we can prescribe an effective treatment. To diagnose a urinary problem, we will perform a urinalysis, and if we spot the Capillaria eggs, we will diagnose your cat with bladder worms. Treatment for Capillaria infections typically involves:

  • Antiparasitic medications
  • Anti-inflammatory medication such as prednisolone
  • Keeping the cat hydrated and comfortable during recovery
  • Follow-up visits to ensure the infection is gone and to prevent recurrence

Common Urinary Problems in Cats

The symptoms of Capillaria can mimic those of other urinary issues in cats, including:

  • Urinary tract infections: Bacterial infections that cause inflammation and discomfort
  • Feline lower urinary tract disease: A term used to describe various chronic disorders affecting the bladder and urethra
  • Bladder stones: Mineral formations that can block the urinary tract and cause pain
  • Idiopathic cystitis: Inflammation of the bladder without a known cause, often stress-related

Protecting Your Catโ€™s Urinary Health

To protect your cat against infectious parasites like Capillaria and other urinary problems, consider the following steps:

  • Ensure your cat always has access to clean, fresh water.
  • Maintain a clean living environment, regularly disinfecting litter boxes and feeding areas.
  • Regularly deworm your cat as recommended by your veterinarian.
  • Keep your cat indoors to reduce the risk of exposure to contaminated environments and intermediate hosts.
  • Monitor your cat's health and behavior, and schedule regular veterinary check-ups.
